How Do We Know This?: Midrash and the Fragmentation of Modern Judaism (Suny Series in Judaica: Hermeneutics, Mysticism and Religion)
Published in Hardcover by State Univ of New York Pr (January, 1995)
Author: Jay Michael Harris
Average review score:

Brilliant review of midrash
This book is an excellent introduction to halachic midrash and is especially valuable in understanding how 19th century Jewish scholars dealt with rabbinic exegesis. By focusing on typical examples of reform and orthodox scholarship, Harris illuminates the entire period without bogging the body of the book in detail. I would highly recommend it to all scholars in Jewish studies and to the casual reader who would like to know more about the relationship of the Biblical text to the Jewish tradition.

How to Be a Super Sitter

Average review score:

BIG BAD BABYSITTER-NOT ANYMORE!
BABYSITTER- (bAy-B-sit-ter) A child's nightmare. In cartoons and books babysitters are qualified as bossy, uncaring, angry, and maybe even scary. Uh,uh. That is wrong. Maybe some sitters are mean and yell a lot, but those are the ones that haven't read this book. Super Sitters is a book that teaches a sitter to be helpful, caring, fun, and just about everything you can think of. It teaches simple first aid, what to ask the parents the first time you babysit for their kids, and what to do in case of an emergency. Not to mention a lot more stuff you wouldn't even think of. And the BEST part is... NONE OF IT IS JUNK! Everything is very useful so if you are a new sitter- Buy this book if you want to be successful. It has helped me to become a better sitter.

How to Have Your Hit Song Published
Published in Paperback by Columbia Pictures Pubns (June, 1980)
Author: Jay Warner
Average review score:

Warner's Powerhouse Publishing Book Just Keeps on Selling
In a handsome edition signifying new publisher Hal Leonard, this fine little book has literally snowballed through the music publishing community, gathering speed and legitimacy over two decades. Author Jay Warner has been an enduring and successful presence in the music community. I remember being introduced to the first edition of his book in the seventies, and subsequently (mid-eighties) spoke with him on the phone. Though conditions and trends in music publishing have changed since first publication of this book, it remains an excellent resource and features both a detailed anatomical description of a big publishing company and an extremely useful checklist of procedures which are used by bigger publishers but are easily put into practice by anyone who is serious about making a business out of showing songs around. Jay Warner's writing style is fast and fun, and his distribution deal for this book with the gigantic Hal Leonard organization has given Warner the broad exposure and up-to-date book design he has long deserved. In my first review of the 1978 edition of this book in 1984, I expressed the hope that the book could be updated and have a long shelf life. All these years later the book has received those periodic updates, is still on bookstore shelves, and keeps selling better than ever. Ron Simpson, School of Music, Brigham Young University. Author of MASTERING THE MUSIC BUSINESS.

Author: Jay Stuller
Average review score:

Intelligent, funny and empathetic
Being the daughter of the author, I am a bit biased, but being raised by a single father, I know that he has alot of experience with and first hand knowledge of, the pre-menstral syndrome. Drawing on his experience with two teenage daughters, countless interviews, and research, my father uses his sense of humour to help men and women both, to understand the complexities of this intregal part of life, with well-informed and helpful suggestions. Bias aside, I highly recommend it.

How to Talk to a Broker (Smart Money)
Published in Paperback by Barnes & Noble (February, 1985)
Author: Jay J. Pack
Average review score:

Every aspect of a broker-client relationship and beyond...
If you trade (stocks, mutual funds, etc), chances are you WILL need to be in contact with a broker.. some day or another. This book and i'll quote the cover is "filled with checklists, sample dialogues, and sound advice (...) best guide to the best financial partnership you can have".

What I liked is that the book just didn't limit itself to the conversation per say.. it went well beyond with elements like: assessing your financial situation, budget, goals, expectations. It presents investment basics (bonds, etc) AND really covers the basics of the in's and out's of dealing with a broker. You know.. the kind of questions you sure would like to have the answers to when you are a beginner: how to settle an dispute, how to phrase an order -- using the correct terms, as if you'd done that all your life; which brokers to avoid.. there is even has a section covering discount brokers!

Truly a good source of information.. presented in a way ANYONE can understand! :)

Huey
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (July, 1988)
Authors: Jay Groen, David Groen, and David Green
Average review score:

Love the book
HUEY is an excellent reading book that reveals the inner workings of being a Vietnam helicopter pilot. Back in '88 I checked this book out from the local library and never forgot it. I purchased my own copy in '92 and have been averaging 4 years between readings. Aside from one chapter on Buda which I always skip, the book is a real page turner.
